So I got back from Charlotte a couple of weeks ago and while I was there I had some amazing food, including one of the best burgers I’ve ever had at Penguin Drive-In (RIP). Here are some quick hits on the places I visited followed by a slide show of some of the great food that was savored during my trip.
Rock Store BBQ on Old Monroe Road in Stallings, North Carolina served up some really good pulled pork, along with 3 sauces (tomato based, vinegar, and mustard). A group of us went here and really enjoyed the down home atmosphere of the small restaurant. They had some of the best corn bread I’ve ever had. Another cool thing is that there is a small produce stand behind it that faces the highway.
This third pound burger served all the way style (chili, mustard, slaw, onions, cheese) from Penguin Drive-In is quite possibly the best burger I’ve ever had. The patty just melted in my mouth. Corn dog was really good, fried pickles were delectable! It’s unfortunate that the owners were pushed out by the land lord and had the business stolen out from under them just a couple days after our visit.
We made a run to Rock Hill, South Carolina to get some of the best Southern Fried Chicken in the world at Shrimp Boat. Like their motto says, ‘Ain’t no chicken, like Shrimp Boat chicken!’
I just had to visit a Waffle House and see what it was like. Basically just cheap fast food breakfast. I don’t recommend it, but at the same I don’t discount it for what it is.
These jalapeno deviled eggs from Q Shack in Charlotte, NC were a great addition to my BBQ Combo Plate and some of the best banana pudding I had in the state.
Lastly my visit wouldn’t have been complete with visiting at least one other restaurant that was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Bar-B-Q King’s chicken might have been a little dry on the inside but I thoroughly enjoyed the sauce drenched fried chicken skin.
So there you have it, a trip through Charlotte, NC, without you having to even leave your seat. I had a lot of fun for my 12 day stay, and even though it was a work trip I was able to enjoy myself and have a good assortment of fun! I was even able to get my first taste of an East Coast staple, Yuengling beer!
Stay tuned for run down of my most recent trip to Palm Desert and my review of Break of Dawn in Laguna Hills, you will not want to miss them!
