Moving away from BBQ for a bit on my visit to Austin, Texas I had a couple nice dinners that I wanted to share, Cover 3 and Old School Grill. Cover 3 is your typical sort of upscale sports bar, while Old School Grill is more like your neighborhood joint. Both served food that I was pleased with along with service that really impressed me. I was really keying in on service while I was in Austin, because that was the main focus of the training I was facilitating for my day job, so the extra efforts both of these restaurants put in to take care of me really hit the spot especially since I was away from home.
At Cover 3 the bartender took the time to explain the ingredients of their cole slaw (blue cheese, apples, candied walnuts) which ended up being the best cole slaw I had on my entire trip, it was a perfect palette cleanser for the amazing “Doug’s Certified Reuben” corned beef, topped with aged Swiss cheese, the greatest spicy Russian dressing I’ve ever had (they use green chiles in it), and kraut. I also had cup of onion soup that I enjoyed. For my drink I had a glass of Fireman’s #4 Blonde Ale, that is brewed in Blaco, Texas by Real Ale Brewing.
At Old School Grill I ordered what everyone was raving about on Yelp, their Chicken Fried Strip, which if you didn’t know chicken fried steak is the national dish of Texas. They make theirs with a New York Strip Steak, breaded and grilled, topped with house made cream gravy, served with garlic mashed potatoes and Texas Toast. The steak was cooked perfect. Unfortunately they placed the wrong order at first and gave me chicken fried chicken (which isn’t even on the menu) but they correctly it quickly for me when I brought it to their attention. It was sort of weird when they brought me both my soup and meal at the same time but it worked out since they had to remake the meal.
I’d recommend both restaurants if you staying somewhere North of Austin, TX.
