I’ve been talking about all the great good I got while in Austin, but I also wanted to tell you about the food that wasn’t really that amazing or great. I had lunch one day at Bill Miller BBQ, and although I can respect the fact that it is a fast food BBQ joint, it was very middle of the road with nothing that really stood out, and the cole slaw needs some work it was too crunchy and was dressed with something close to Italian dressing… I really liked the roll though!
One night I decided to have Tex-Mex so I went to the closest place I could find after the place that had great reviews wasn’t open for dinner and ended up at Rio Grande. I couldn’t really figure out what to get there since everything was basically normal chain Mexican restaurant type food, I asked the waitress for recommendations and she really wasn’t much help so I went with the Puerco Cascabel, even though I didn’t really know what it was other than some type of pork. It ended up being a decent choice but not something I would order again. Something I did like at Rio Grande was the queso dip with chile, if you didn’t know Austin has about a thousand claims to fame and queso is one of their big things. It’s just cheese dip with chiles, but I liked it here.
Finally on Saturday I had to kill about nine hours till my flight back home, I drove all around Austin doing various things, stopping at Best Buy, looking at new homes, etc. and once I got hungry I decided I’d finish my visit to Texas the same why I started with BBQ, so I drove East on Highway 71 till I found this little BBQ shack on the side of the highway called Benny’s Texas Bar-B-Cue. They specialized in Turkey legs, I should have tried the leg, but instead had brisket and sausage. Unfortunately the brisket was chewy and the sausage wasn’t really that great. But it was nice sitting on the side of the highway having a meal at a little shack.
Lastly what is a visit to Texas without partaking in the beers of the state, so I got myself a variety case of Shiner beers (along with a Schlitz because I’d never had it.)
And here are some more pictures to go with everything above.
