In case you have been living under a rock, or just not paying attention Del Taco started serving up Shredded Pork “Carnitas” Tacos and Burritos starting yesterday September 8th. I happen to have been passing a Del Taco during lunch time today and decided what better time than now to check out their rendition of my favorite fried Mexican meat, carnitas.

Tacos can be had for $1.59 while Burritos are $2.99.

Del Taco Canitas?!

The tacos come with my arch nemesis cilantro along with diced onion and some type of red “sauce”. It was ok, nothing was amazing about it, the carnitas flavor was the only thing standing out, it was decent for fast food, but I’ve had much better carnitas from taquerias.

Burritos are served with cheese, beans, and green sauce.

The burrito really reminded me of the shredded beef burrito they used to have (it’s no longer on the menu), the taste was similar along with the same mouth feel. I actually did get some crunch from some of the carnitas, which is usually my favorite part.

Overall these items were ok, they are fast food and exactly what I expected for fast food, they are decent renditions of a dish some people may have never had, so it’s a good gateway to try to get a friend to try carnitas if they aren’t the adventurous type when it comes to their food. For most of the people I dine with this isn’t going to blow them away. Ultimately will carnitas stay on the menu at Del Taco, I don’t know, many other fast food establishments have tried and decided to bow out of the carnitas business (El Pollo Loco, Taco Bell, etc), so we will have to wait and see.

I just hope someday they bring Dan from Del Taco back along with the Slow Cooking the Beans commercial. (I can’t find that commercial on YouTube if someone can find it I would love to post that instead of this one.
