Philippe The Original Restaurant – Los Angeles

Philippe The Original French Dipped Sandwiches
Philippe The Original French Dipped Sandwiches

For those of you that aren’t aware, I’m a big lifetime Los Angeles Dodger fan (I like the Angels too, I grew up rooting them both on), but it wasn’t only up until recently that I have heard that Philippe is the place to go before heading to Dodger Stadium.  We tried to go before a playoff game back in 2008, but the line was out the door so we had something else.  This previous weekend it was an errand that brought us to LA, instead of a Dodger game, and since we were only 15 minutes away from Philippe, I was determined to finally try them out.

The four of us each ordered a Beef Dip ($5.75) some of us with cheese ($.40-$.60) and some without.  Plus both myself and my dad ordered salad ($1.15 for your choice of Potato, Macaroni, and Slaw).  Overall for the four of us with drinks, sandwiches, some sides, and a jar of their famous hot mustard, we got out for just under $40.  Considering we were eating in LA, I considered that a deal.  We all thought the sandwiches were good.  Mrs. DanGarion has jack cheese on her’s and commented that she couldn’t really taste the cheese.  I had Swiss since that’s what usually comes on the French dips I order, and although it didn’t standout, I liked the compliment it gave.  My dad decided to drench his sandwich in their mustard because there wasn’t any sauce on it (save the Au Jus they dip the buns in) and was treated to a nasal passage clearing.  I also ended up putting a bit too much mustard on it, but was fortunate enough to also get 1/2 of my mom’s sandwich to sample (no cheese).  I also liked the macaroni salad, I can’t remember what my dad said about the potato salad but he did eat in all.  Oh and their lemonade was great.

I’d definitely have another sandwich at Philippe’s if I’m in the area in the future.  We rarely travel to LA, but Philippe’s really is a landmark, I’m happy to now say I’ve tried the Original French Dip.

Visit on Sunday 6/27/10 for lunch @11 AM
