Arthur’s – Orange (Review #2)

I know I’ve reviewed Arthur’s Coffee Shop in Orange previously, but that was for breakfast.  Little known fact is that they serve up cheap eats for dinner, Thursday – Saturday as well!  Arthur’s has early bird specials ($7.49) for dinner from 4:30 PM-6:00 PM on 11 different meals.  True the specials are smaller portions then the normal dinners, but where else will you get this much for the price.

All of their dinners come with your choice of soup or salad, potatoes (baked, mashed, or french fries), and dessert.  Mrs. DanGarion ordered the Fried Chicken dinner with mashed potatoes ($7.49).  They call it Okie Chicken, but it’s really just broatsed chicken,  The chicken was hot and juicy, just like it should be, and fried to a deep golden brown.  I had the Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes ($7.49).  The steak had just a bit of a crisp crunch from it’s frying and was smothered with the same tasty chicken gravy that they put on the mashed potatoes (which are made from scratch).  To start the meal I was given a bowl of french onion soup that was filled with onions, a couple croutons, and a slice of cheese on top, I’d never had this soup here before but I really enjoyed it.  Along with the meat and potatoes, the meals come with creamed corn, the Mrs. doesn’t like it so I had to have both servings…  And then there are the biscuits…  oh my the buttery flavorful biscuits, some of the best I’ve ever had at a restaurant, they are savory and delicious, especially with honey, which the Mrs. thinks I’m crazy to have with them.  To finish it all off you get a choice of around 5 desserts, most being boring, except for the best bread pudding I’ve ever had (I get it every time I’m here, and the price is right, FREEEEEE!)  All in all it was a good solid home cooked style meal.  Nothing extraordinary, but also nothing bad, and the price is right (total bill for food and 2 sodas $21)!

Service is usually pretty good, but it all depends on the waitress you get.  While we were eating the owner came by and asked how our meal was,  we have seen him many times there, he eats his meals out in the dining area with his family or friends normally.  It helps that they are right around the corner from us, but I could see us driving here for a home cooked meal if we didn’t live in Orange.  There are very few places like this left around here.

Visit on 03/19/09 @5:00 PM for dinner
