Fortunately the stars aligned and Mrs. DanGarion and I had a chance to check out Bruxie on their opening day! What is Bruxie you ask? Well they are a new concept that makes Gourmet Waffle Sandwiches with both sweet and savory options. Their location is at the former home of Dairy Treat just north of the circle at Orange Plaza.
For our first attempt into the world of gourmet waffle sandwiches we stuck to the opposite of what conventional wisdom would consider the norm, we went with savory waffle sandwiches to fulfill our dinner needs. Mrs. DanGarion ordered the Cheesy Bruxie ($4.95), that comes with both Tillamook Cheddar and Gruyère cheese, added with tomato ($.50) and avocado ($.75).
I wanted to try the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffle, but unfortunately they were out of those due to the high demand the first day, so I went with the Prosciutto and Gruyère ($6.50 + $2.00 to add waffle fries) that comes with whole grain mustard and chives.
We both agreed that our meals were good, although the Cheesy Bruxie was a bit salty due to salting of the tomato. As for mine I would have liked to have had some more mustard, maybe on the side to dip the sandwich into, but overall it was a hit. The waffles were cooked perfectly and are just the right thickness. We were both happy to see that Bruxie wasn’t using a Belgium waffle thick waffle. We both hope this move to a more traditional style waffle becomes a trend as people revolt against the thick doughy Belgium waffles that litter the current restaurant circuit!
Service was a bit slow, but was expected, especially for the very first day of operation. The line was about 8 deep when we arrived and orders continued throughout our dinner, so it’s expected for there to be a bit of delay as they work their kinks out. We both agreed that Bruxie is definitely something we would have again and probably swing into our rotation of restaurants to visit when we want our fix. Our next trip there will be to discover their sweet waffle selections, I’m looking forward to trying the Nutella and Bananas!
During our meal we found out that they do plan on adding some revolving menu items and plan on eventually making the marshmallows for the S’Mores waffle in-house. Looking forward to seeing how things develop.
