For lunch today I went down to the Anaheim Farmers Market and tried Piaggio Gourmet on Wheels as well as Crepes Bonaparte (review will be posted tomorrow). First off I’d like to say that the Anaheim Farmers Market gives Irvine’s a run for its money, I was really impressed with the vegetable selection, number of vendors, and the fact that it is open from 12pm-7pm every Thursday. I found out yesterday via the Fast Food Maven over at the Orange County Register that Anaheim was going to start hosting food trucks during the farmers market and I decided I couldn’t pass up being one of the first to check it out.
If you aren’t familiar with Piaggio on Wheels you should check out their website. They are an Orange County based, Argentine taco truck, serving everything from empanadas to dulce de leche. Being that it was my first experience with Piaggio I decided to have a sample of a couple different items on their menu.
Menu for the day included Tacos, Empanadas, Sausage Sandwiches, Brisket and Pork Sliders, Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs, Quesadillas, Burritos, Chimi Fries, and Churros with Dulce de Leche.
First up was the Pulled Pork Sliders, two pulled pork sliders, served on hawaiian buns with chimichurri and pink sauce. The pork was perfectly cooked to where it was moist and fell apart, much like carnitas, but a much leaner cut of meat. My previous experience with chimichurri sauce was the Trader Joe’s rice variety and I loathed it, but Piaggio’s freshly made chimichurri has turned a new leaf over with me. Pink sauce added just enough flavor and helped bring everything together. I work order these again, although some may feel that for $5 you should get another slider, I thought the quality of the sliders made them worth the price.
On to the Steak Taco and Chicken Empanada. Unfortunately the taco was pretty much a miss. The meat lacked much flavor and I would have preferred the meat under the produce, because when I took my first bite all the meat fell out of the taco. I will say that the tortilla used was very good, it didn’t have an overpowering taste to it, like some corn tortillas tend to have. The Chicken Empanada on the other hand was superb! I’m not quite sure exactly what they put in it, but whatever it was made it good, and I enjoyed using the side of chimichurri sauce to dip it in, it added more flavor to the party.
Overall it was a good meal, even with the miss on the steak taco, but there are enough other items on their menu that could replace it that I’m not afraid of being let down next time.
