Well if you visited the site yesterday you would have seen I did a quick live blog from Sprinkles Cupcakes in Newport Beach. I’m going to try and start doing those, and give my immediate opinion when we have the time. Remember that’s all I’m doing giving my opinion based upon the current visit, your miles may vary! Anyway Mrs. DanGarion and I went for a drive and after having some of the best sandwiches in Orange at The Filling Station we went for a drive. As we went on our drive the Mrs. sweet tooth activated (it’s been doing that a lot lately as she craves for the chocolate she gave up for lent). Since we were already in Costa Mesa because I had to get a tool box from Sears I suggested we go and try some cupcakes from Sprinkles. Many have praised them here when I’ve visited previous cupcake joints and also on a number of the other sites I read, so I figured it was our turn to check them out.
First thing we noticed was that this place is busy! We arrived there around 1 PM and there was a line up of about 5 people in front of us. I did like the design of their menu and how they show what cupcakes are available as you are waiting in line. The wait wasn’t long, which it shouldn’t be, it’s not like they are baking the cupcakes to order! I ordered 1 Lemon and 1 Red Velvet, along with a milk, the cupcakes were $3.25 each. The Lemon cupcake was good although it was a bit sweet and not very lemony, we both thought it could use more lemon flavor like that of a lemon bar, also the cake was a bit dense when compared to other bakeries and even the Red Velvet that I had. Talking about the Red Velvet it was delicious! The cake was moist and the cream cheese frosting was great. I do however prefer the version of Susiecakes with it’s filling in the middle. We also both commented that the edge of both the cupcakes seemed to be a little crunchy, not sure if that’s typical or not of Sprinkles. I really want to try the Peanut Butter Chip next time we come. For a listing of flavors and the days they are available click here. The Mrs. prefers the cupcakes at French’s Cupcake Bakery in Costa Mesa to Sprinkles.
Overall things were good, and the service was friendly. They took my order and quickly put it together for us. I would think they could look into not wasting boxes for those customers that choose to eat their cupcakes outside, it seemed sort of wasteful to package them up in a box when we were justing going to open it right up. I can see us coming here again if we are in the area and looking for a treat, especially once chocolate is back on the table!
Visit on Sunday 04/05/09 @ 1-2 PM.
