Many a time I have seen signs in Mexican taco shops saying “Tacos Al Vapor” just like at Tito’s La Familia in Orange and up until today I never really put much thought into what that meant. I had a hankering for Mexican food and wanted to try something new so I headed to Tito’s to finally see what exactly is al vapor. Plain and simple they are steamed tacos, the corn tortillas specifically, and they usually are a bit greasy with just a little bit of orangeness to them from some chili and they are each wrapped with thin wax paper when they are prepared. I’m sure someone can provide more input but most of what I know was from this question on Chowhound. Regardless of what they are, they are kick ass.
Since it was my first time at Tito’s La Familia I wanted to go with both something I was familiar with and something new, so I ordered one taco dorado (beef), because I love crunchy tacos, and two tacos al vapor (beef and chicken). All the tacos were $1.89 each but there was a taco under the tacos dorados that was $2.25
All the tacos were really good and I enjoyed their red hot sauce in squeeze bottles they had, I used it to cool the tacos down to a temperature that made them easier to eat and it added just the right about of spice (pretty hot) and flavor for me to enjoy the tacos even more. The taco dorados come with lettuce, guacamole, tomato, and cheese, while the all vapor have basically just lettuce on them. No cilantro in sight (YAY!)
Service was fast with the tacos brought to my table in less than 5 minutes which is about how long they lasted on my plate! I will definitely be going back and having more of these delicious tacos! Plus I need to go back and try their breakfast burritos.
