Orange, California Restaurant Reviews

Eat in OC in Desert Cities, California

This is my last travel review of the year.  Work has been hectic and they have sent me all over, and for the grand finale they sent me to beautiful Indio, California!  Actually most of my nights were spent in Palm Desert, while my days working were in Indio.  The restaurants I visited were primarily in Palm Desert.  Here are the highlights of my trip.  (All three restaurants are in the same shopping center, on Cook Street, just of the 10 Freeway in Palm Desert.

Lucky's CookHouse - Short Ribs
Lucky's CookHouse - Short Ribs

Lucky’s Cookhouse, Famous Fat Tire Slow-Braised Angus Short Ribs, supposed to come with smashed fingerling potatoes but I opted for a side of their cheesy mac, I’m sure the presentation with the potatoes is better than this. ($15.00).  The ribs were just a bit dry, but still had good flavor.  They weren’t as good as the ones I had a Roy’s the previous week.

I seem to always be let down by Macaroni and Cheese, it never has the flavor I’m looking for, this was more of the same.  Very little cheese flavor, maybe it’s because of my upbringing on Kraft Macaroni and Cheese?

I’m not quite sure what it was about this bread but it was perfect, so I had to share a picture of it.

Dogo's Sonora Style Hot Dogs, The Dogo Dog
Dogo's Sonoran Style Hot Dogs, The Dogo Dog ($4.75)

Dogo’s Hot Dogs and Beer has a couple of locations in the Desert Cities area, I’m unsure why they tout their beer since it’s basically the usual stuff, there is nothing out of the ordinary in their beer selections.  Their dogs however are pretty good.  They use Hebrew National franks along with Sonoran Style buns to make top-heavy dogs, like the Dogo Dog pictured above topped with bacon, pinto beans, onions, cabbage, tomatoes, mayo, avocado (that looks more like guacamole) and topped with jalapeño sauce.  Good flavor, but there is just so much on top of it, I had a hard time eating it with my hands.

Dogo's Sonora Style Hot Dogs, Chili Cheese Dog
Dogo's Sonora Style Hot Dogs, Chili Cheese Dog ($4.50)

I ended up eating this Chili Cheese dog with a fork and knife.  Tasted about like a chili cheese dog would if you made it at home with a basic chili.  I would have liked something without beans and a little thicker.  All in all it was a good meal and somewhere worth checking out if you want a hot dog out of the ordinary, but the prices are a bit steep to what I’m used to paying for hot dogs.  I guess I should say something about their Sonora style bun, it seems a bit dry for a hot dog, I tend to be a fan of a soft steamed bun.

Roc's Firehouse Grill, Fire Chief Burger ($12.50)
Roc's Firehouse Grill, Fire Chief Burger ($12.50)

I really wanted to like Roc’s Firehouse Grill’s, Fire Chief Burger, it’s topped with some of my favorite things, pastrami, 1000 island dressing, cheese.  But the patty just made this a ho-hum burger.  It’s just the typical preformed 1/2 lb. patty you can get at Costco.  What this burger needed was a fresh hand formed patty, especially for the price.  The fries were of the beer battered variety and pretty good, but for what I paid I just expected better quality beef.
